DESIGN PROBLEM

Design a Visual Language inspired by a relative and include syntax and a system for the language.

DESIGN PROCESS

My grandmother was a very special person to me. She loved to learn, but she came from a poor family and did not have the chance to go to university so she learned when she could.

In designing the key to the language and originating the individual characters that would form the alphabet, I took inspiration from the many languages she learned including Japanese, Hebrew, Russian, and English.

Important aspects from my grandmother’s life were compiled into a timeline of words that include the many places she has lived, to important stories from her life, and interesting quirks she had like writing backwards.

DESIGN SOLUTION

The Japanese character for strength and the Russian word “Prochnost” or endurance come together to form the backbone of the alphabet.
